COSMOLOGY IN GURBANI

Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled Sikh Holy Scripture, Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in 1604. The holy book enunciate that God exists both as transcendence and immanence. Epistemology expounds in Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji resembles mostly with modern-day science. One should not forget, Quantifications and Observations are used by researchers to discover unknown secrets of cosmos whereas religious scholars determine it by divine intuition. The aim of both of them is to seek ultimate reality in most dynamic and precise manner.

ਕੀਤਾ ਪਸਾਉ ਏਕੋ ਕਵਾਉ ॥

Keethaa Pasaao Eaeko Kavaao

By uttering a word, vast expanse of the universe was created by God.

ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਵਣ ਥਿਤਿ ਕਵਣੁ ਵਾਰੁ ॥
ਕਵਣਿ ਸਿ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੋਆ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥ਵੇਲ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਪੰਡਤੀ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ॥
ਵਖਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕਾਦੀਆ ਜਿ ਲਿਖਨਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥
ਥਿਤਿ ਵਾਰੁ ਨਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਮਾਹੁ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ॥ 
ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਠੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

When was the universe created? What was that season, month, day, date, time and moment? Neither Qazis not the yogis nor the pandits know that time albeit mentioned in puraanas. The creator himself only knows.

ਅਰਬਦ ਨਰਬਦ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਾ ॥ਧਰਣਿ ਨ ਗਗਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ਨਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਨ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇਦਾ ॥

Arabadh Narabadh Dhhundhhookaaraa ||Dhharan N Gaganaa Hukam Apaaraa ||Naa Dhin Rain N Chandh N Sooraj Sunn Samaadhh Lagaaeidhaa ||

At the state of pe-recreation, the creator was all alone in sunn samadhi or primal void for interminable eons in darkness. There was neither earth nor sky nor sun nor moon.

ਤਿਥੈ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਰਭੰਡ ॥ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਥੈ ਤ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਅੰਤ ॥

If one speaks of galaxies, planets and solar system, there is no end to it.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ਅੰਤ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਹਿ ||ਤਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ਏਹੁ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ਬਹੁਤਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

Limits of cosmos are imperceptible. Numerous people strive to know the limits of the universe. No-matter how much you say it still remains to be said.

ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਲਖ ਆਗਾਸਾ ਆਗਾਸ ॥

Paathaalaa Paathaal Lakh Aagaasaa Aagaas ||

There are skies above skies and nether worlds underneath nether worlds.

ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ॥ਅੰਡਜ ਫੋੜਿ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿ ॥

Aapae Sach Keeaa Kar Jorr ||Anddaj Forr Jorr Vishhorr ||

By joining element, the creator created cosmos, then break the cosmic egg and then fix it again.

ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਚੰਦੁ ॥ਕੋਹ ਕਰੋੜੀ ਚਲਤ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ ॥

In fear of God, heavenly bodies travel endless, millions of kilometre.

ਆਪੁ ਆਪੁਨੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੀ ॥ਬਰਨਤ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਤੁਹਿ ਤੇਤੀ ॥ਤੁਮਰਾ ਲਖਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥ਕਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥

Aapu Aapunee Budhi Hai Jetee ॥Barnta Bhiaann Bhiaann Tuhi Tetee ॥Tumaraa Lakhaa Na Jaaei Pasaaraa ॥Kih Bidhi Sajaa Parthama Saansaaraa ॥

Everyone understands cosmic knowledge as per his intellect. But no one can tell how was the universe created.
